While the San Antonio International Airport isn’t a hub where passengers typically connect, there’s still a great airport hotel and reasons why passengers would opt in for a stay. Early morning flights, late-night arrivals, or trips into San Antonio to explore outlying spots in the Texas Hill Country are situations where it might make sense to spend the night at an airport hotel.

San Antonio has several airport hotels; however, none of them are in-terminal or on the airport property. The Marriott San Antonio Airport is located approximately a five-minute drive from the airport.

The lobby is warm and welcoming and posh without being stuffy. The teal tones carry throughout the property’s decor.

Complimentary shuttle and parking

If you’re renting a car, parking is free; however, the lot is not secured. For the to-and-from the airport runs, the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle. Check airport pickup procedures when making your reservation, and for airport drop-off, speak with a representative at the front desk.

I requested a 9:00 a.m. pickup for an 11:00 a.m. flight, and my shuttle driver was waiting when I came downstairs, a little before the requested time.

King Room

My room had a comfortable King bed and the typical Marriott amenities – a small fridge, two bottles of water, a large flat-screen TV, and plenty of plugs and USB ports. My bathroom had a walk-in shower, no tub, and the standard complement of toiletries that I’m used to seeing in Marriott rooms. The bedding was also very comfortable.

I had a lot of floor space and a little sitting nook with a sofa and coffee table. The floor was partially carpeted and part laminate. The decor was minimal and restful with blue tones that carried through the color scheme from the lobby.

If you’re looking for a room with a view, you won’t find that here. The hotel is situated along Interstate 410, with a busy shopping mall directly across the street.

Marriott’s M Club

The M Club is Marriott’s premium club, usually offered to Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite and above members. If you don’t qualify for this status, you can ask at the front desk if you can purchase an access pass. The M Club at the Marriott San Antonio Airport is on the first floor, which is unusual. The M Club is typically located on a high floor of the hotel, taking advantage of city views, but that’s not a consideration in this location.

The M Club at this location offers comfortable seating, grab-and-go snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages. During the evening, there was a hot food buffet, and in the morning, M Club access gets you into the hotel’s breakfast buffet, which has a mix of pastry, yogurt, fruit, and hot breakfast items like eggs and sausage.

On-Site Dining

The on-site Agave 210 Bar and Restaurant was the best part of my stay at the Marriott San Antonio Airport. Hotel restaurant food is usually average but this is a spot I’d consider for happy hour or date night, which is doable since access to the lobby doesn’t require going onto the airport property or through security. There’s lots of seating in the pretty bar area across from the lobby. There’s also a separate “restaurant side” that is a bit more sterile in terms of decor. Our server told us we could sit where we liked and we chose the bar side, as the tables were spacious and the vibe a lot warmer.

The menu features a selection of appetizers, salads, and mains, as well as an extensive list of agave-based spirits, including tequila flights and reposados. There is also a fun menu of dessert drinks, such as a vanilla Funfetti cake martini.

We split an order of nachos as an appetizer. Whoever is putting these together knows what old-school Tex-Mex nachos are supposed to look like, and I was impressed. For entrées, we ordered an Avo Ahi Salad and a Center-Cut Sirloin. Both were delicious, but what stood out was how the chef managed to cook this very thick steak to a perfect, medium pink.

Reveiew of Marriott San Antonio Airport – Should you stay here on a city break visit?

Should you stay here if you don’t absolutely have to be near the airport? You could, and it might be a more economical option than staying downtown. There are plenty of hotels on the Riverwalk that are just steps from San Antonio’s popular attractions but the airport is less than 10 miles from downtown. Traffic is a variable but it is generally not a long drive.

You’ll undoubtedly save money on a hotel room by not being near the Riverwalk/downtown but consider adding up the transportation costs. If you rent a car, you can park free at Marriott San Antonio Airport but you’ll have to pay to park downtown, as there’s not much free parking. If you stay downtown, hotel parking is typically not included in the room rate. Ride shares are readily available but will the money you spend getting back and forth cancel out the room savings? This will largely depend on what you’re doing and how many times you plan to go back and forth between the hotel and downtown but if you want reliable Marriott comfort and a quieter spot than the lively Riverwalk, this may be a solid, more wallet-friendly option.
